Welcome to the information site for the Master of Arts in Bioethics at Emory University. I’m so glad that you’ve taken the time to learn more about our program!
We have assembled an interdisciplinary faculty of accomplished scholars and teachers to orient you to the foundational concepts in bioethics. In addition, our student body is as diverse as our faculty. Previous and current students have included physicians, lawyers, allied health professionals, biotechnology leaders, as well as students who come directly from baccalaureate programs. This interdisciplinary – and interprofessional – nature of the classes enables a robust and vigorous discourse, representing a variety of previous experiences.
Our curriculum is structured around a series of core competencies that are designed to equip you with a solid foundation of the primary skills, knowledge, and attitudes central to the advanced study of bioethics. There are 18 required credit hours and 12 hours of electives for students to explore specific topics of individual interest in more depth. We also have several dual degree programs, with more in development.
Upon completion of the MA in Bioethics, students will be prepared to engage in the robust discourse that permeates the consideration of bioethical issues. Some students use the MA in Bioethics to transition between an undergraduate degree and professional school (MD, JD, PhD, etc.). Others use the degree to enhance their existing careers (e.g. healthcare professionals who serve on hospital ethics committees and desire to formalize their study of bioethics). A few students have simultaneously started employment with the Institutional Review Board.
Regardless, students graduating with the MA in Bioethics will have enhanced their skills at identifying, assessing, and addressing ethical issues in health care, science, and technology and will be prepared to serve as critical thinkers in society writ large.
I invite you to spend some time carefully working through these informational pages, and welcome you to contact me if you have questions or would like to discuss your particular situation. We look forward to getting to know you and your interest in bioethics!
Sincerely,
Director, Master of Arts in Bioethics | Center for Ethics Associate Professor, Department of Medicine | Emory University School of Medicine 404-727-1752
