Ethics and Servant Leadership accepting 'Forum' applications until September 12, celebrates successful summer internships

EASL is proud to celebrate the conclusion of its third year of programming this summer. Melissa Snarr and Mary Sue Brookshire continue to lead the EASL program in its curricular and co-curricular development.

At the end of July, the Servant Leadership Summer internship program came to a close. Interns spent thirty hours a week at their community placements, which included the Community Housing Resource Center, The Children’s Museum of Atlanta, and Refugee Family Services (formerly Newcomers’ Network). In addition, interns invested an additional three hours each Friday reflecting with their peers. We also added a poetry component to this year’s reflection sessions, offering students a creative outlet for processing their experiences. Melissa Range served as our poet guide in this endeavor.

This year’s intern group was slightly larger (thirteen students served in eleven placements this summer), largely because our community partners had a difficult time choosing between such stellar applicants. Two organizations raised the funds to support a second EASL intern, and several others expressed an interest in doing so. We count this an ongoing affirmation that the Servant Leadership Summer program continues to attract Emory’s outstanding students and community partners.

The EASL Forum will start its fourth year this fall, building on its core model of vocational development, servant leadership formation, and community commitments. We are extremely privileged that Karen Salisbury, Assistant Dean of Campus Life and Director of Student Activities, and Lisa Flick, Director of Programs at CityCares, will continue to provide leadership to the weekly Forum sessions. The Forum provides students with opportunities for conversation with community servant leaders and social entrepreneurs from a variety of sectors, including business, medicine, and the arts. Elements of the program include leadership skill building, ongoing participation in community service, and personal reflection. We look forward to another great year of growing and developing as leaders in service to the common good. Applications will be available when students return to campus in August and are due September 12.

Melissa and Mary Sue would like to continue to express their gratitude to all our community partners, Emory colleagues, and phenomenal students who embody the program’s vision of serving and leading for the common good. Many thanks for your hard work, ongoing support, and inspiration.
