EASL 'Forum' completes third successful year

On April 19, 2002 the third Ethics and Servant Leadership (EASL) student forum celebrated the end of an incredible year together. Melissa Snarr, director of the Ethics and Servant Leadership program, gave the closing address. Each student was presented with a certificate, a book, and a copy of the covenant the group drafted together.

The Forum kicked off with a retreat in early October 2001 and met weekly through April 2002. In addition to EASL program associate Mary Sue Brookshire, the group was facilitated by Lisa Flick (Director of Programs, CityCares) and Karen Salisbury (Assistant Dean for Campus Life and Director of Student Activities, Emory University).

In the fall, the Forum focused on developing leadership skills, including building consensus, working for change, and attending to personality differences among teams. In the spring, students practiced their new skills in four community service project groups. One team worked with Amnesty International and developed an introductory teaching module on human rights for use in middle schools. A second team worked with the Coalition for a Voting America to develop civic roundtables and voter education academies to promote civic engagement, especially at Emory. A third team worked here at Emory to produce training materials on Servant Leadership for use in the Freshmen Advising and Mentoring at Emory (FAME) groups. The fourth team worked to establish a Living Wage campaign at Emory, cooperating with employees, faculty, and other local Living Wage campaigns. Each group presented its project to the EASL Forum on April 4. The facilitators were simply in awe of the incredible work produced by the groups.

In September 2002, the EASL Forum will begin its fourth year, continuing EASL's mission "to support Emory leaders as they develop the power to serve and lead for the common good." For more information on this exciting program, please contact Mary Sue Brookshire.
