For some time, the Center for Ethics has published ethics news & views as a semiannual, print publication. But there is much that goes on between our January and September editions.
One proposed solution has been to publish more frequently, say once a month or once a quarter. While there would certainly be plenty to say, the cost in time and resources is prohibitive at this point, and the ethics of printing on more paper need to be taken into account too.
For events, we have often relied on our mailing lists to distribute flyers. But even the flyers' producer—yours truly—had to admit that, more often than not, flyers from so many worthwhile organizations only end up in his own wastebasket as just more unwanted colored paper, even before they are read or considered.
Luckily, at a board meeting this year, someone suggested using email. It's quicker, its cheaper, and it doesn't waste paper or postage. And for many of us, it's a short step from reading an email to putting an interesting event in our planner.
But more important than the logistics of announcing events, an email newsletter allows us to provide thought provoking content more often. And so now, about every other month, we will send you an email newsletter very similiar in content to the print version of ethics news & views, containing news, essays, and book reviews.
It is our hope that these supplementary editions to the semiannual print editions of ethics news & views will foster and promote the teaching, research, and practice of ethics in our lives.
