Science, Ethics & Society update

The Science, Ethics, & Society Initiative (SESI) has been excitedly working toward Emory’s hosting of the Fourth National Undergraduate Bioethics Conference on October 4-7, 2001. A core group of undergraduates, led by Scot Siera, has been developing requests for funding for the conference.

To generate ideas and energy for the conference, SESI is organizing a number of Bio-ethics Coffees throughout the year. These intimate gatherings of faculty members and 5-10 students focus conversation around particular current issues in bioethics and serve to strengthen our growing bioethics community.

In the fall, coffees were led by Dr. Arri Eisen, Director of SESI, discussing the implications of the recent death in a gene therapy trial; Dr. Howard Kushner, Robertson Professor of Science & Society, discussing a recent case of conflict of interest at Emory; Dr. Pat Marsteller,Director of the Emory College Center for Science Education, discussing ‘dangerous ideas and the university;’ and Dr. Nick Fotion, Professor of Philosophy, discussing cultural differences and ethics in terms of US scientists performing experiments on people in other nations.

The coffees engaged students from the College, Law School, Medical School, and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences.

We are planning more such coffees and a different kind of film festival for the spring—stay tuned.
