This spring marks the debut of the first course taught by Ethics and Servant Leadership (EASL) faculty. Melissa Snarr will offer “Ethics in Action: An Introduction to Practical Ethical Engagement” in the religion department.
Drawing on philosophical, sociological, biological, and religious resources, students will examine the understandings of persons, their commitments to society, and the cultivation of ethical and compassionate decision-making and leadership. The course is organized around concrete case stories in several sectors, e.g. biomedical, business, political, and educational. Guest speakers will help introduce issues in each of the sectors.
Texts for the course include Hugh LaFollete’s Ethics in Practice, Paul Ehrlich’s Human Natures, Robert Greenleaf’s Servant as Leader, Parker Palmer’s Let Your Life Speak, and a reading packet. Students will also choose one of the following texts: Coles, Lives of Moral Leadership; Daloz and Parks, Common Fire; Blumenthal, The Banality of Good and Evil; Colby and Damon, Some Do Care; or Sarah Lawrence Lightfoot, Respect.
