Seminars meet monthly on the 4th Thursday of each month (3rd Thursday in November and December).
Ethical issues regarding the question medical futility have been addressed on a number of occasions over a number of years and include the following initiatives:
Health Care Ethics Consortium of Georgia Task Force on Futility Report, 1997
This program extended the conversation on futility into a discussion about specific approaches to these requests including institutional futility policies and pursuit of a state law.
This task force was comprised of representatives from all Emory-affiliated hospitals. The intent had been to identify or develop common approaches to these difficult questions. The TF was unable to come to a consensus on how to best proceed, resulting no reportable outcome from this group.
Health Care Ethics Consortium of Georgia program, Futility Dilemmas: Where Do the Solutions Reside? November 17, 2008
This report summarized the question of medical futility as existed at the time and proposed a number of recommendations for addressing clinical situations where futility was or could be an issue. The report strongly supported improved communications as a process for addressing this issue.
