Hilary Mabel

Hilary Mabel is a Bioethicist/Healthcare Ethicist in the Center for Ethics and an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the School of Medicine. She teaches in the Master of Arts in Bioethics program and at the School of Medicine.

Prof. Mabel publishes conceptual bioethics scholarship as well as qualitative research and quality improvement work in healthcare ethics. Her interests include complex issues in healthcare ethics, professionalization of clinical ethics, moral distress, law and bioethics, transgender health and bioethics, and reproductive ethics. Prof. Mabel's scholarship has appeared in Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynecology, The American Journal of Bioethics, Hastings Center Report, The Journal of Clinical Ethics, Cambridge Quarterly of Healthcare Ethics, and Narrative Inquiry in Bioethics, among others.

Prof. Mabel has worked as a clinical ethicist and ethics fellowship director. She is a certified healthcare ethics consultant and has conducted over 1,000 ethics consultations. Her clinical experience spans 18 hospitals across two major health systems, ranging from rural community hospitals to urban quaternary care hospitals. She has experience designing and leading hospital ethics programs, conducting bedside ethics consultations, providing moral distress support to healthcare professionals, and advancing organizational ethics and values-based alignment efforts.

She serves on the board of directors for the Council On Program Accreditation for Clinical Ethicist Training (COPACET), which aims to promote the highest levels of professional competence for clinical ethicists entering the field through fellowship training. She previously served on the HCEC Certification Commission, which oversees and administers the national certification program for clinical ethicists. In 2018, Prof. Mabel was the co-creator and co-director of the first clinical ethics unconference, a working meeting for clinical ethicists to share innovative practices, solve mutual challenges, and imagine and co-create the future of the field. She has since co-directed the unconference a second time.

In the Master of Arts in Bioethics program, Prof. Mabel teaches Foundations II: Classic Issues in Bioethics, the Practicum in Bioethics, and Reproductive Ethics. At the School of Medicine, she provides plenary ethics education to first- and third-year medical students and teaches in the OB/GYN clerkship.

Prof. Mabel received her JD from Harvard Law School and her BA summa cum laude from the University of Florida. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship in advanced bioethics at the Cleveland Clinic. Prior to transitioning into bioethics, Mabel practiced law. Upon graduating from law school, she served as a federal law clerk to the Honorable Roy B. Dalton, Jr. in the Middle District of Florida.
