Ethics & the Arts uses creative expression to elevate moral discourse. The production of art, its role in public conversation, its preservation and presentation provoke us to confront ethical challenges, sometimes in startling new ways.

As I conclude my third academic year as Director of Ethics & the Arts, I’m reflecting on the past nine months with a full heart. This year, we sparked conversations around six Southern films through the Ethics at the Movies series, launched a new gallery initiative with Visual Arts, hosted a two-day documentary ethics conference in partnership with the Atlanta Film Society, elevated an Emory artist’s work through an installation at the Supermarket, presented a play with the Theater department, and led a free bus tour focused on style writing and graffiti. By cultivating meaningful partnerships across the university and strengthening ties with Atlanta-based organizations, we’ve expanded our reach and sold out our last five events. Most rewarding, however, has been bringing together people from different backgrounds through shared artistic and ethical inquiry. This year offered many proud moments, especially witnessing students and community members engage in thoughtful, transformative dialogue sparked by the arts.
